Fly Direct to Phu Quoc: 30 Days Visa-Free for Travelers
Here is the part most travelers find out too late: if you fly directly into Phu Quoc, you can stay up to 30 days visa-free — on the condition that you do not travel on to mainland Vietnam. For a beach trip, that condition costs nothing. It is the strongest argument for reaching the island by air rather than routing through the mainland first.
What that actually means in practice
The exemption applies to travelers arriving directly by air and staying on the island. Add a few days in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi to the same trip and it no longer applies, so the itinerary has to be built around the island rather than treating it as one stop among several.
That constraint shapes the trip more than it limits it. Thirty days is long enough that the island stops being a stopover and starts being the destination — which is a different holiday from the three-night version most visitors book, and arguably a better one.
The routes that make it possible
Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) now handles a growing list of international services — Bangkok, Seoul and Kuala Lumpur among them, with charter flights arriving from Europe. For visitors already in Southeast Asia, that turns the island into a genuinely short hop rather than a multi-leg journey.
Domestic connections cover the rest. Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air and Bamboo Airways fly direct daily from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Da Nang, at roughly one hour, two hours and an hour and a half respectively.

Up to 30 days without a visa, provided the trip stays on the island.
The trip in outline
Fly in, stay on the island, fly out. It is a deliberately plain itinerary, and that is the point — the arrival is a single hop rather than a sequence of connections, which is what makes the longer stay practical in the first place.
The dry season from November to April is the stretch worth aiming for, and peak-season seats are the thing to book first — they are the only element of this plan that genuinely runs out.
Everything overland — the six-to-eight-hour buses to Ha Tien or Rach Gia, the Superdong and Phu Quoc Express crossings — remains available and useful, but it belongs to a different kind of trip than this one — the one where the mainland is part of the plan, and the visa-free window no longer applies.
