Having the gear is only half of it; using it well is the other half. These practical tips help you pack smart, stay comfortable and stay safe in the water. They pair with the full gear checklist.

Before you pack

  • Test your mask's seal at home, not at the beach

  • Apply defog spray before you leave, and pack the bottle

  • Pack everything in a mesh bag so it can dry on the way back

In the water

  • Protect your skin. Wear a rash guard or reef-safe sunscreen; surface snorkeling burns fast.

  • Clear fog and water calmly. A breath through the nose clears the mask; the purge valve clears the snorkel.

  • Pace yourself. Fins save energy, but the sun still tires you out.

Stay safe

  • Never snorkel alone; always go with a buddy

  • Check the weather and tides, and avoid rough water or strong currents

  • Stay hydrated, since dehydration leads to fatigue in the heat

  • Know your limits and take a break the moment you feel tired

After the trip

  • Rinse gear in fresh water and dry it in the shade

  • Inspect straps, valves and the mask before storing

  • Learn more about snorkeling safely in this beginner safety guide

Do these and the gear does its job, leaving you free to enjoy the water. When you're ready, here's a look at snorkeling around the island.
